The US Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday issued Apple a patent for a system that utilizes near field communications to activate device-to-device data syncing, much like the so-called “S Beam” feature found on certain Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

Apple’s US Patent No. 8,458,363 for a “System and method for simplified data transfer” is a massive 84-page patent describing a number of ways in which wireless data syncing between two electronic devices can be accomplished. Of note, the property calls for the use of NFC components, which have yet to appear in Apple’s product lineup.

The patent was first outlined by AppleInsider when the property’s application was published in 2009. At the time, the filing showed promise as an easy method to swap files to and from various devices, especially given its ability to move data cross platform.

From the patent summary:

A method of performing the simplified data transfer may include initiating communication using near field communication (NFC) between two devices. Next, data associated with open applications on one of the two devices may be saved and then transferred to the other. Transferring the data may take place using a peer-to-peer connection other than via NFC.

For example, in one embodiment of the patent, a user can “tap” their NFC-toting iPhone to a similarly equipped Mac to initiate the transfer of wireless network data. Once the Wi-Fi network configuration information is received, files like a Keynote presentation can be transferred from the Mac to the iPhone.

Any number of NFC-enabled devices and file formats can be used in Apple’s system, including the Apple TV and remote, a video game controller, Macs, iPhones, and more. In the patent language, two illustrative apps called “Grab & Go” and “Revisit” described possible mobile functions like syncing data from open applications on another device, and storage of data in the cloud.

Apple may be gearing up to take advantage of near-field communications technology in a next-generation iPhone. According to 9to5Mac, prototypes of a sixth-generation iPhone appear to include NFC hardware wired to the power management unit. Combined with Apple’s recent unveiling of the Passbook app for iOS 6, the implication is that iPhone users may soon be able to wave their devices at merchant terminals to pay bills and even receive loyalty discounts.

NFC is a low-power, short-range radio communication technology. It allows two devices to communicate securely when in close proximity to each other. One common consumer implementation of the technology is used in credit cards which can be “waved” over a special reader to pay a retailer. In parts of Asia, mobile phones with NFC capabilities are commonly used to purchase items at retail, to buy from vending machines, or to pay transit fares, with transactions added to a monthly cell phone bill or deducted from a credit card associated with a user’s account.

Despite the efforts of credit card companies and handset makers, NFC hasn’t taken off much in the rest of the world just yet. Even Google’s vast resources have yet to help its system gain significant traction with users or retailers.

But the iPhone’s popularity, along with Apple’s usual knack for simple consumer-facing technologies, could be the catalyst to popularize NFC with smartphone users. Passbook, a new app that will be part of iOS 6, will be a one-stop shop for coupons, tickets, passes, and customer loyalty cards. Buy movie tickets from Fandango, for instance, and the app will store a bar code that can be scanned for entry at the theater.  With an NFC chip, you could merely wave your iPhone over a special reader to check yourself in.

Apple could go one step further, connecting the NFC hardware to a user’s iTunes account for iPhone-based mobile payments. Pop in the local 7-Eleven for a quick snack or drink, and you could simply wave your iPhone over the credit card terminal to pay from the credit card associated with your iTunes account or Apple ID.

Rumors of NFC hardware coming to Apple devices has been growing over the past year or so. When combined with the fact that Apple has applied for several patents related to mobile NFC use, as well as hired its own NFC expert, it certainly seems plausible that a next-gen iPhone could begin Apple’s foray into mobile payments.

What is NFC (short for Near-Field Communications) ?

Near field communication, or NFC, is a set of short-range wireless technologies, typically requiring a distance of 4 cm or less. NFC operates at 13.56 MHz and at rates ranging from 106 kbit/s to 848 kbit/s. NFC always involves an initiator and a target; the initiator actively generates an RF field that can power a passive target. This enables NFC targets to take very simple form factors such as tags, stickers, key fobs, or cards that do not require batteries. NFC peer-to-peer communication is also possible, where both devices are powered.

So how do these devices work?

Let’s look at the operational modes, which is important in order to get a better undertanding of what we can do with NFC.There are two modes:

• Passive Communication Mode: The Initiator device provides a carrier field and the target device answers by modulating the existing field. In this mode, the Target device may draw its operating power from the Initiator-provided electromagnetic field, thus making the Target device a transponder.
• Active Communication Mode: Both Initiator and Target device communicate by alternately generating their own fields. A device deactivates its RF field while it is waiting for data. In this mode, both devices typically have power supplies.

Why all the hype? What can we do with it?

Well, sky’s the limit as is usually the case with every emerging technology, but here are some specific uses for NFC:

• Card emulation: the NFC device behaves like an existing contactless card (think transit passes, etc)

• Reader mode: the NFC device is active and reads a passive RFID tag, for example for interactive advertising (this would KILL/OWN QR codes)

• P2P mode: two NFC devices communicating together and exchanging information (e.g. file / data transfer – would give a whole new meaning to “giving” files to other users)

According to the Census Bureau, the vast majority of Americans live in cities, and in most cities public transportation is a top priority. That’s why a new innovation in delivering advertisements via public transportation in Japan could point toward the future of transit ads in the U.S.

The system, developed by Japan-based firmShunkosha, is called Strappy and allows train passengers to access advertisements and other information via a Near Field Communication (NFC) equipped strap cover. According to Keitai Watch, the passenger can simply touch their compatible phone to the strap cover and get immediate access to the content being delivered to that NFC point.

The testing of the system began in Tokyo in mid-May on several high-traffic train lines. According to the manufacturer, although the user will have immediate access to advertising information and other content, the company will not collect personal data from the users of the system, an important point in a time when consumers are becoming increasingly privacy-sensitive.

The key issue in getting such a system to propagate beyond the confines of high-tech Japan is introducing the U.S. public to more NFC technology. Japanese train passengers have been using their phones for years to quickly and conveniently pay for their rides with a tap of their phones at station turnstiles.

But in the U.S., systems like MasterCard’s PayPass, which allows you to simply tap an NFC-enabled key fob or phone to a terminal to pay for items, still appear to be less popular than paying with a normal credit or debit card, despite the fact that it’s been around for several years.

This slow adoption hasn’t stopped NFC payment technology from being adopted by major credit card companies as well as companies like Google, Verizon, and others. But as consumers show reluctance in adopting this cutting-edge form of payment, a seemingly less risky practice involving consuming advertisements and discounts on specially equipped trains and buses could smooth the way toward more acceptance of NFC technology as a primary, cashless payment option of the future.
